Wii breaks online sales record

Nintendo Wii
The Nintendo Wii might not be out in Britain just yet, but it's already broken a sales record.

One internet shop sold all its stock of the console in just seven minutes when it made it available for people to pre-order on Tuesday.

That quick burst managed to top the speed of previous pre-order record holders, which were Harry Potter books and an album by Coldplay.

The Nintendo Wii is due to hit the shops in Britain on 8 December

Sony's PlayStation 3 has already gone on sale in Japan and the US, but won't hit shops in the UK until March 2007.

The other new console, Microsoft's Xbox 360, went on sale in the UK before Christmas last year.

The Wii is the cheapest of the three consoles, and is the one most aimed at younger gamers.

Nintendo hope that a new way of controlling games it has developed for the console will help it get people playing who haven't done so before.
