Gorillas get their own island

Five gorillas are to get their own island to stop them wandering off into nearby villages in the Republic of Congo in Africa.

The male animals - called Yambo, Kola, Titi, Massissa and Bangha - have been looking for girl gorillas for romance.

But they've been causing trouble by eating villagers' crops so work started to make them an island home on 60 acres of land surrounded by rivers.

The gorillas were all rescued after being sold on the illegal pet market.

Bangha was the first to be released on to the island, and the other four are set to leave their current home on the Lefini Reserve to join him later this winter.

Spokesman Amos Courage said the animals' well-being was the main concern: "By giving these five their own island, we can avoid future conflicts between gorillas and villagers.

"At 60 acres, the site is large enough for the males to each have their own space and avoid fighting," he added.
