Rooney made his international debut in 2003 and made the squad for Euro 2004, but an injury against Portugal ended his tournament early. England were knocked out
In 2006, Rooney moved from Everton to Manchester United. The transfer fee was worth around £30m!
Rooney made his United debut a few weeks later - when he had recovered from his injury. He scored a hat-trick in a Champions League win against Fenerbahce
Along with Rooney's rise to fame, his girlfriend (and later fiancee) Coleen McLoughlin has became front page news as one half of a mega-showbiz couple
It took Rooney a while to win his first trophy - finally picking up a League Cup winners medal in February 2006. He was also man-of-the-match in a 4-0 win against Wigan
In March 2006, he signed a huge book deal, starting with autobiography My Story So Far. Amazingly, he was still only 20 years old
With the World Cup in Germany approaching, England supporters were really worried when Rooney broke his foot in a match just weeks before the tournament. Ouch!
He recovered in time to play in the World Cup, but was never really fully fit and was sent off in the quarter-final against Portugal
