British gymnast bags gold medal

Beth Tweddle

Beth Tweddle has became the first ever Briton to win a gold medal at the World Gymnastics Championships.

The 21-year-old from Liverpool scored 16.200 points in the uneven bars event, beating defending champion Anastasia Liukin who scored 16.050.

The new world all-around champion Vanessa Ferrari from Italy came third with 15.775.

Afterwards Beth said she was delighted: "All my hard work has finally paid off and I'm absolutely ecstatic."

"A lot of people told me it would come, but I didn't think it ever actually would. It hasn't sunk in yet."

Last year Beth won a bronze in uneven bars at the same event.
