Teacher suspended in veil row

Aishah Azmi

A Muslim teaching assistant has been suspended from her job for refusing to take her veil off.

Aishah Azmi, who works at a junior school in Dewbury, said that the pupils never complained about it.

Some Muslim women say the holy book the Koran tells them that they should wear the veil. Some cover up their faces completely, like Ms Azmi.

But the local council said the school kids had difficulty understanding her with her face covered.

Now a local government minister has added to the row by saying she should get the sack.

Ms Azmi has said she would remove the garment but not in front of male colleagues.
