Horse's amazing journey home

Emily with Basil
You may have heard of a homing pigeon, well here's the story of Basil the homing horse!

The intrepid pony escaped from his new stable and travelled miles in the dark to find his young owner.

Basil managed to open a paddock door with his teeth, jump a fence, and then trot 5km (three miles) across 14 different roads!

His owner Emily, 12, couldn't believe it when she woke up to find the Welsh cob outside her home in south Wales.

The 18-year-old pony had been moved from a paddock at the family home in Cilybebyll to new stabling two weeks before so that Emily could practise her show jumping.

When she woke up to see him back in her family's farm with his three horse friends Emily was so amazed she started crying.

Her dad Lyn Evans said: "She burst out crying with a mixture of surprise and relief when she realised the journey he had undertaken and what could have happened on the way."

Mr Evans said it was astounding that Basil had found his way home as he would have had to follow a complicated route including crossing a busy road.

When Basil has settled down after his journey, he will be returned to his new home - but a more secure lock will be put on his stable door!
