Basketball was invented in America in 1891 when Dr James Naismith decided he needed to create a game which teams could play that would be fun and get people fit.
The game took off immediately and was a hit in schools and colleges in America and came to the UK in 1892.
It's a bit like netball, but there's five players instead of seven and you can dribble the ball.
