Why use the news?

Topical content is a great way of energizing lessons and using the news also gives subjects like citizenship a stronger identity in the minds of students.

The downside is that material from the mainstream media is not always suitable, and resources go out of date very quickly.

The Newsround teachers section gets round these problems and makes it easier to use news in the classroom. The citizenship page features hundreds of lesson ideas that are mapped to curriculum areas and based around topical news stories.

The news stories are written for children aged 7-11 and these are supported by hundreds of explanatory guides on subjects ranging from conflict in the Middle East to Bird Flu. There are also links to quizzes and photo galleries, there's even a calendar of topical assembly ideas. The teachers section is updated five days a week during term time, so there's always something new on offer.
