Doctor's new assistant speaks out

Freema Agyeman
Freema Agyeman, who plays the new assistant in Doctor Who, has done her first interview with the press.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, Freema said she could barely believe she had the part: "It's so much more than I'd ever envisaged for myself," she said.

She also gave a bit of an insight into what her character, Martha, might be like from the writers' early ideas.

"She believes she's more on a level with the Doctor... but whether they've stuck with that, I've no idea."

Freema will have her work cut out if she wants to impress the millions of fans that Billie Piper pulled in while playing Rose.

But she had a message for those fans: "Be ready, willing, able and open to go on a new journey with me.

"I'm not taking over from Billie. I'm not trying to replace her. I'm going on new adventures and I can't wait to get started.

"Seriously, it's going to be incredible."
