Man to swim entire River Thames

Lewis Pugh
A man is embarking on a 15-day swim along the entire length of the River Thames, to raise awareness of the problems of climate change.

Lewis Pugh will paddle from its source near the Welsh border to where it spills into the North Sea.

The 36-year-old has done a lot of tough watery challenges, and is the first person to do a long-distance swim in all the world's five oceans.

He hopes his swim makes people think about how the environment is changing.

He said: "Climate change is not just affecting remote areas like the poles."

"It's here on our doorstep and I feel very strongly that it's time to do what I can to help raise awareness of the issues."

The River Thames is 203 miles (326km) long, and the 15-day swim will begin next Monday at Kemble near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, and finish at Southend-on-Sea in Essex.
