Newsround tries out Nintendo Wii

Newsround presenter Ellie was one of the first people in the UK to try Nintendo's brand-new Wii console.

The Wii is different to most consoles, as you can control it just by waving the controller around, rather than only using buttons and thumbsticks.

The Wii will be in shops later in the year, and is a rival to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

The new Xbox came out before Christmas last year, and Sony's PS3 will be in shops later in 2006, as will the Wii.

Gaming expert Chandra Nair said that for kids aged from eight to 10, the Wii would be the console of choice.

He said: "The Wii has got to be the one to go for because it's cheaper. It's about £200 while the PS3 is about £400 and that's a lot of money."

Nintendo let some specially invited people have a go on the new console, including Newsround presenter Ellie.

They were able to play a game called Wii Sports that lets people use the controller to play things like baseball, tennis and golf.
