Rooney speaks out about red card

Rooney sees red
Wayne Rooney has spoken out about the incident that got him sent off at the World Cup, saying he was "amazed" to be shown the red card.

"If anything, I feel we should have had a free kick for the fouls committed on me during the same incident," he said.

The striker was given his marching orders in the second half of Saturday's quarter final tie with Portugal, which England lost on penalties.

"I did not intentionally put my foot down on Ricardo Carvalho," he added.

He said he was disappointed that Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo got involved with the sending off, but he had no ill feelings towards his Man Utd team-mate.

Rooney praised the spirit of his England colleagues.

"I thought they were awesome after I went off and the effort they put in was amazing."
