The German driver took his Ferrari to first place at the famous Indianapolis Speedway Circuit, winning the race for the fifth time in his career.
World championship leader Fernando Alonso could only finish in fifth place, but still leads the standings.
Alonso is 19 points ahead of Schumacher as he bids to win a second successive drivers' world championship.
Schumacher's team-mate Felipe Massa finished in second place, ahead of Alonso's Renault team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.
David Coulthard was the best-placed British driver, finishing in seventh place.
