Help for kids who can't swim well

Children who struggle with learning to swim will be given intensive swimming lessons to get them up to speed, the government will announce on Tuesday.

Pupils who can't swim 25m by the time they are 11-years-old will be given lessons every day for two weeks to help build their confidence in the water.

About 17% of 11-year-olds have trouble swimming even though you are meant to be taught the sport in primary school.

It's hoped the lessons will also get more children into sport and exercise.

Schools Minister Jim Knight said: "Every child should learn to swim. It is an essential skill and is a fun way to exercise.

"We want to give as many pupils as possible confidence in the water, and the potential to enjoy a whole range of other water sports and activities."

Confidence

Lewis, 11, could only swim half a length before he went on the two-week training course.

After completing the course he said: "I feel more confident in the water so when I go on holiday I can swim now."
