World Cup - Togo

Favourite player: Ronaldinho

Togo 0-2 France: Friday 23 June

I watched the match with my friends and we watched with both excitement and fear during first half of the game!

During half time we were joyful about how our national team were playing and prayed that they stayed confident and strong-minded!

But ten minutes into the second half Vieira gave France the lead. And then a second goal by Henry put an end to Togo's hope.

I believe that we could have done better if the team had had more preparatory matches against great teams and there were less money troubles within our Football Association.

I am now sorry the Togo team are now out of the World Cup.

Togo 0-2 Switzerland: Monday 19 June

On the 19 June there were young people everywhere on the streets of Lomé just like during Togo's first World Cup match. But this time there were more because the fans were more confident!

So at the start of the match we were surprised by Frei's goal for Switzerland.

But I still thought that 'les Eperviers' could still change the course of the game and win.

Switzerland's second goal made us furious and when the referee refused to give a penalty my friends and I were really upset for our team - some people even left the room and stopped watching the game!

Now we just hope the players will keep their confidence and skill and obtain a draw against France.

Togo 1-2 South Korea: Tuesday 13 June

A few hours before the match between Togo and Korea, groups of boys and girls were on the streets of Lome, the capital to show their support to the team and they went round wearing yellow jerseys made especially for the fans of the team!

My friends and I were very anxious as we gathered in our sitting room for the first match of the Togolese team, but shortly after the game started we became confident and expected at least a draw.

When Cougbadja Kader scored in the 30th minute a great shout was heard all over the town. We all jumped, shouted and embraced each other. Some people even removed their yellow t-shirts and used them like flags and chant the song for 'Les Eperviers'!

We though we were going to win but unfortunately, the second half did not go the way we expected. The captain Abalo Dosseh was sent off after a second yellow card and the Korean team scored. A sudden silence went round and then the second goal of the Korean put us in a deeper silence.

So, Togo's 'Les Eperviers' lost their first match but their game was ok. And all their fans hope they will do better in the next match against Switzerland.

Tournament preview

What's the atmosphere like in Togo?

Togo is a small country in western Africa. 'Les Eperviers' is the name of our football team, which means 'hawks'. They had a wonderful game during the African Cup of Nations and came out first of their group in the World Cup qualifications.

Most of the fans are backing them and expect at least one victory in Group G with South Korea, France and Switzerland. Togo is a French-speaking country and a victory over the Bleus of France would be a nice present to the Togolese! I hope our first participation to the World Cup will be a success!
