Doctor Who bags a pair of Baftas

Billie Piper and David Tennant
Doctor Who has taken two top gongs at the British Academy Television Awards at a ceremony in London on Sunday.

The show bagged the award for best drama series at the ceremony, and star Billie Piper accepted the trophy, on stage with a Dalek!

Speaking afterwards, writer Russell T Davis said: "It's lovely, it's gobsmacking, it's a programme that children watch and the family watch."

The show also won the Pioneer Audience Award, voted for by TV viewers.

The X-Factor took the prize for best entertainment show.

TV chef Jamie Oliver also had a good night, winning two gongs.

Jamie's School Dinners took the best factual series award and the Richard Dimbleby Award for outstanding presenter of a factual programme.

Eastenders won best continuing drama, beating off strong competition from Coronation Street, Holby City and Casualty.
