In January 2004, the US military police began an investigation into the way the troops guarding a prison were behaving.
They interviewed 50 people, some were soldiers and others were prisoners.
The investigation found that Iraqis had been beaten up with chairs and broomsticks and that military dogs were used to frighten the inmates.
This resulted in US soldiers standing trial for the prisoner abuse.
By January 2005, five had been sentenced, one received a 10-year jail term. Three more were awaiting trial.
