The opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne started outside the stadium
After some boats had made their way up the River Yarra it was the turn of some metal fish, representing the 71 countries
Host city Melbourne is famous for its trams. Of course most don't fly around the city, unlike this one
A number of the performers in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) took to the air as well
Other dancers preferred to keep both feet firmly on the ground as the Games got under way
All the teams got a chance to play their part during a parade. Hosts Australia seemed to be enjoying themselves
The Queen, who is the head of the Commonwealth, declared the 18th Games open
And then things got really exciting, with the River Yarra seemingly turning from water to fire
But there were even more explosions to come, with the Australian night almost beoming daytime
Back inside the stadium the 81,000 fans watching on were given a spectacular show as well. Let's hope the sport's this good too!
