Should Beckham have been dropped from the England team?

David Beckham
The new England manager Steve McClaren has named his first squad and David Beckham is not on his list!

Becks stepped down as captain in June and he's had an injury so there's been lots of rumours that he wouldn't be picked to play in the England friendly against Greece.

But do you think he should have been dropped from the England team?

Maybe you think it's a good chance to give younger footballers a chance to play for England?

Or do you think David Beckham is still the best midfielder England has?

I think that it was really mean and cruel to drop David off the team just like that because he has been a key player in many games. Just because he had an injury doesn't mean he should be kicked off. Wayne Rooney got an injury and didn't get kicked off so why should it be any different for David?
Caz, 13, Belfast

I don't think David Beckham should have been asked to go because he's still a good player.
Hollie, 9, Sedgley

No way should Beckham be dropped. He shined as captain and he would continue to shine as a normal player. And he can't be that bad, he plays for Real Madrid!
Mark, 13, London

I am glad Beckham has finally been dropped, he should have been dropped long ago, he was only in the team because of his free kicks and long balls. But if you compare him to Shaun Wright Phillips and Aaron Lennon they are much more useful than him and Frank Lampard is just as good at free kicks as Beckham.
Aman, 13, London

Steve McClaren has only been manager for a short amount of time and he has already made a huge stupid mistake!
Jake, 12, Newport

He is the best player and he shouldn't have been dropped.
Tom, 11, Glasgow

Yes I do think Beckham should leave because he has done his job.
Jay, 12, Stourbridge

Yes Beckham should have been dropped because all he can do is free kicks and long passes. McClaren needs to make way for more talented stars like Aaron Lennon who are much more skilled and actually run with the ball instead of just passing it.
Emily, 14, Banbury

Beckham shouldn't have been dropped from the England squad because in the World Cup he made England into the semi-final because of his amazing free kick. And he has been amazing throughout his time at England, so STEVE McCLAREN HAS MADE A BIG MISTAKE!
Tom, 12, Weston-super-Mare

It's so unfair. He just stopped his job as captain and now they are stopping his job as player.
Mookin, 9, Surrey

How can Steve McClaren not put David Beckham in our squad? Who is going to take our free kicks and corners and who will be better than David Beckham?
Lizzie, 14, London

Everyone is yelling and complaining about Beckham being dropped from the squad - why? He was a good player but let's admit it, he's really lost his touch. Everyone will forget him in two seconds!
Sophie, 11, Basingstoke

No way! He is a brilliant player but I guess it is only a friendly so who cares?!
Aman, 9, Birmingham

I think as long as a player is fit, healthy and plays well then he should carry on playing. When he becomes unwell or unfit then he should be dropped.
Nicola, 14, Surrey

Yes! I'm glad Beckham has been dropped!
Rhiannon, 13, Derbyshire

Absolutely not! He was a credit to the team and Steve McClaren has been really unfair.
Tabassum, 11, Wakefield

I think David Beckham should be kept in the team and only retire in a couple of years time.
Arjun, 10, Nottingham

I think Beckham should still play for England. England need Beckham!
Amrit, 11, London

I think Beckham should be in the England team because he is the best footballer in England!
Jack, 10, Tyldesley

I think that Beckham should not have been dropped. It's not really fair after he has been playing for England so long.
Hannah, 13, Leigh

Although he has resigned as captain I don't think he should have been dropped because he is a great asset to the team and sets up goals well.
Sam, 12, Wells

No way should he be dropped - what a mad decision from a foolish manager!
Ryan, 11, Dereham

Becks proved he's still got it after scoring against Ecuador and providing the goal against Paraguay. So he should play against Greece, like in 2002 when he scored his free kick against them - he could do it again.
Conagh, 10, Blackpool

No, definitely not. Beckham is a good player and English football won't be the same without him.
Alex, 11, Harwich

I'm not sure Beckham should be dropped as he is one of England's best players. But as he is getting older and if the younger players are fitter than him and they should be given the chance to show what they can do!
Natalie, 13, Sheffield

No, he should 100% NOT BE DROPPED as he is the best player they have!
Sarah, 13, Manchester

No-one will ever be able to replace him!
Lauren, 14, Sedgley

No way! Beckham is one of our most experienced players! If we lose him, we don't just lose the skill and talent but we'll lose the spirit. Beckham has been through lots of difficult times with the squad and we need him.
Charli, 13, Edgware

Of course Beckham should be dropped. I think Eriksson's main mistake was playing all his stars whatever their form. Good decision Mclaren!
Philip, 13, Bangor

I think Beckham should play against Greece because he is the best at taking free kicks and corners.
Jordan, 11, Cowbit

I think that Beckham should play in the friendly against Greece because he is the teams best corner taker and the best free kick taker too!
Reem, 12, London

If there are better players, who can deliver consistently, then I agree Beckham should be dropped. He shouldn't be kept on the team because of his name. However, if there weren't better players he should be in the team - so what if he didn't want to be captain - it's the way he actually plays that counts!
Amrit, 14, Cardiff

No, I don't think Beckham should have been dropped because he's a brilliant player and he gives a lot to England. If Steve Mclaren drops Beckham I don't think people will forgive him.
Jordan, 14, Portsmouth

I think that Beckham should be dropped, especially now there's a different manager. If there are players better than him able to play then he shouldn't be allowed to play just because he is David Beckham.
Zoe, 12, Trowbridge

Heck no! Becks is England's best free-kicker so we can't afford to lose him!
Joseph, 11, Cattistock

They can't drop Beckham! He's the only reason I watch England play!
Kathryn, 10, St Albans

I think David Beckham should play the game against Greece because he is the best footballer England have.
Rishav, 10, London

I want David to play for England forever!
Bradley, 8, Westbury

I think he should be dropped and they get Aaron Lennon on instead.
George, 9, Buckingham

If he's not fit I think he should be dropped now he's not the captain. It's only a friendly match against Greece anyway.
Ben, 10, Bognor Regis
