China battered by violent typhoon

Woman in China

More than a million people have been forced to flee their homes in China, as the most powerful storm to hit the country in 50 years landed on Friday.

At least 104 people have been killed by Typhoon Saomai, and the bad weather has also destroyed 7,000 houses.

Worst hit is Zhejiang province on the east coast, where the storm hit land.

Saomai has now weakened to become a less powerful tropical storm, but is still hammering areas on the coast with high winds and heavy rain.

Officials told reporters that winds had been so strong that windows were slammed into rooms.

Although Saomai has been downgraded to a tropical storm, people have been warned there is still the risk of landslides and flooding.

China has been hit by eight powerful storms so far this year.

Although bad weather is common in the region between July and October, there has been an unusually high number of big storms this year.
