US Vice-President shoots friend

US Vice President Dick Cheney
US Vice-President Dick Cheney has accidentally shot and injured a pal he was out on a shooting trip with.

Mr Cheney was out hunting quail on Saturday at a ranch in Texas. While tracking a bird flushed out for him, he turned and shot Harry Whittington, 78.

Mr Whittington was taken to hospital and an official said he was "stable and doing well".

Mr Cheney visited his unintended victim in hospital on Sunday and was pleased to see he was in "good spirits".

The owner of the ranch, Katharine Armstrong, said that Mr Cheney was a "very safe sportsman".

"This is something that happens from time to time. You know, I've been peppered pretty well myself," she said.
