More freedom for zoo's creatures

Gorilla
Visitors to London Zoo will be getting up close and personal with some amazing animals under new plans for the park.

Cages are being torn down and replaced with enclosures which re-create the wild - with plans including a £5.3m African rainforest area.

Within two years, animal-lovers will be able to watch the gorillas go about their business in the man-made forest.

Future plans include freeing tigers and big cats from their pens and creating a more natural habitat for them.

A zoo spokesman said: "We want people to go away inspired and having had some real connection with the natural world."

The new plans follow the opening in March of the zoo's "monkey walkway" where visitors can check out birds and reptiles as well.
