Should the cartoons have been published?

Protesters burn a Danish flag
There has been a huge row over cartoons published in newspapers in Europe.

Many Muslims have been offended by the drawings, which show images of the Prophet - or Allah.

Do you think the cartoons should have been published?

Should you be free to say what you like even it offends someone else's religion?

Or is it better to say nothing so people don't get angry?

E-mail and let us know.

No, they shouldn't because of course they would offend but there was no need for a really big riot.
Char, 11, Isleworth

If you have nothing nice to say, then you shouldn't say anything. If you wouldn't like to hear it neither will someone else. It affects lots of other people and could have been upsetting.
Class 6, 11, Milton Keynes

I myself being a Muslim am disgusted by the cartoons, and for a French magazine to publish it again, it's disgraceful.
Hasan, 12, Wakefield

I think the cartoons were plain stupid and shouldn't have been published, however the reaction is making the offence grow bigger. I am a Muslim and am up for freedom of speech but if the 'speech' hurts or deeply offends another religion whether it's Islam, Christianity, Judaism etc I will protest against it in a civilised manner.
Sameeha, 15, Blackburn

I am a Muslim girl and am extremely offended by the pictures. However, I don't believe that violence is the answer. Violence came after people published pictures that they knew would be offensive and would cause uproar.
Tas, 15, London

No, they shouldn't have been published: It's insulting... But Muslims are taking things WAY too far! People criticise the Christian faith sometimes and I don't go around protesting and burning flags. Not all Muslims are doing all this, I know, but those who are... Well.
Heather, 14, Hoghton

I am a Muslim and am offended by the cartoons but the protesting should stop.
Rizwan, 12, Livingstone

I am a Muslim and I find the cartoons very offensive. But I do think that some Muslims are going way overboard. We Muslims have a right to be angry but some are taking it too far.
Radiya, 11, Romford

As a Muslim I'm insulted by these cartoons and think they should be banned worldwide.
Sajidah, 14, London

No, I think it's terrible for people to insult other people's religions but on the other hand the protestors have taken it a bit too far. I understand freedom of speech but perhaps people should consider the consequences of their actions before doing stupid things.
Kurt, 13, Horsham

No, if it is an insult to a religion then I don't think these cartoons should have been published.
Lil, 15, Middlesbrough

In this country we are told not to be racist but when the adults are that's like saying it's alright.
Laurence, 10, Flitwick

I think that they shouldn't have published the pictures, but what some Muslims have done in return makes them just as bad as the paper publishers.
Matthew, 12, Croydon

I'm a Muslim and I do find the cartoons offensive but I also think that the protestors have taken it too far as well.
Adil, 12, Bedford

I think the caricature was stupid and publishing it was childish. In my opinion Muslims were deeply offended by it. The cartoon made the situation look like all Muslims are terrorists which I think they aren't. I've got a Muslim friend and she is the same as me.
Giulia, 11, Oxford

I think that the protesting has gone too far.
Ellie, 10, Eastbourne

I am a Muslim and I have been offended by these pictures and the people that published them should be prosecuted because it is racist and caused lots of riots throughout the world.
Tim, 15, London

I am a Muslim and I think there is such a thing as freedom of speech, but there is a difference between freedom of speech and insulting other people's religion.
Kimya, 10, Newcastle-under-Lyme

No - it was very wrong for these cartoons to have been published. I whole heartedly believe in freedom of speech but not publicly - this opinion should have been kept private. However I also believe that the reaction of the Muslims has been very wrong.
Becky, 14, Chester

I was extremely upset about the cartoons but all I want to say is when you have demonstrations and things you shouldn't because it causes more havoc and probably war.
Anisa, 12, Bradford

I think that people shouldn't have burnt Danish flags and gone to such extreme limits as they did. I think that if they wanted to raise the subject of free speech then they should have done that in a way that doesn't offend peoples' religion.
Alice, 11, London

Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say anything about everything, because you can't. Other people wouldn't like this if it happened to them.
Unzola, 15, Glasgow

I am not a Muslim, but it is not right to offend someone's belief. I think the people who published these cartoons should be punished.
Sinthiya, 11, London

I don't think the cartoons should have been published but I do believe that some people are taking this too far.
Anna, 15, London

I believe that the cartoons should of been published as we have freedom of the press, and if you don't have this eventually the press will not be showing true stories, only controlled propaganda.
Bob, 12, Newport

I think they should have known more about the religion before making jokes about it. I find it very stupid from both sides because they should have respect and the other side shouldn't use violence. There's a reason why we have a brain and a mouth!
Majo, 14, Mexico

It was a really stupid thing to do and I'm totally against it. How will they feel if we put a cartoon of their religion on a newspaper and insult it...huh? I wish people tried to care about others and their beliefs.
Noone, 12, Surrey

I believe that respecting peoples beliefs overrules freedom of speech and that people should think before they do something like this.
Tristan, 14, Alton

I am not prejudice about other cultures because a lot of my friends are from different ethnics but I do believe in freedom of speech. We shouldn't just stop saying what we believe just because it hurts other people's feelings.
Katie, 14, Dartford

I am very upset and offended by what has been published recently in Danish newspapers, as I'm sure many other Muslims are too. I am totally for the freedom of speech but would never do anything or say anything to insult someone else's religion.
Sarah, 12, London

I think that the whole idea of publishing cartoons to make fun of the religion Islam is very insulting to Muslims. It is very offensive to create pictures as a way of insulting and making fun of another person's religion.
Sana, 12, Sheffield

No, because if it causes someone getting killed and there being more racial abuse then there is no point. Whoever drew that picture is causing riots and is offending a lot of people.
Sara, 13, Birmingham

I am Muslim and I am very upset about the cartoons, but the protest did not help it only caused more arguments and danger.
Zahra, 10, Middlesex

People shouldn't make fun of other people religions. It hasn't just made people angry, it also really offends Muslims.
Martha, 10, Bristol

The cartoons should have been published, it's part of freedom of speech. I think that British newspapers and TV channels are wrong not to show the cartoons. The public have a right to see what all the arguments and violence are about.
Will, 15, Colchester

I think that the protestors are wrong because people make fun of other religions like Christianity, but you don't see Christians running around ordering people to be killed.
Davina, 12, Wallington

Just because freedom of speech means we CAN say anything we like that doesn't mean we always should. We have the legal right to be offensive, but manners means we aren't.
James, 13, London

I think it's such a shame that all the worlds' religions can't live together without violence.
Sara, 13, Grantham

I think that it is wrong that the cartoons have been published. It is an attack on Muslims everywhere.
Tasmeen, 12, Northampton
