Premiership: Shearer nets record

Alan Shearer
Alan Shearer took Newcastle's all-time scoring record and led the Magpies to a much-needed 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

Newcastle, who sacked manager Graeme Souness this week, went ahead thanks to a Charles N'Zogbia goal.

Shearer got his 201st goal for the club in the second half when he picked up a backheel from Shola Ameobi to fire past Pompey goalkeeper Dean Kiely.

Shearer will take the headlines, but Newcastle's overall performance was a huge boost on recent showings.

Meanwhile, a Luke Moore hat-trick piled on the misery for sorry Middlesbrough as Aston Villa got a 4-0 win at the Riverside. The other goal came from Kevin Phillips.

Moore put the visitors ahead after 18 minutes when he pounced on a loose ball in the box and rocketed it home.

Phillips doubled their lead six minutes later, flicking James Milner's cross inside the far post with a header.

Moore then stabbed home another on the hour mark before completing his hat-trick with a well-timed chip.

Manchester United recovered from their midweek defeat to Blackburn with 4-2 victory against Fulham at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo - with two goals - Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha were in target for United, while Brian McBride and Heidar Helguson scored for Fulham.
