In Pictures: Hamster and snake make friends

Here's Gohan the hamster, who was destined to become the meal of a rat snake - until the pair made friends.

The snake called Aochan was offered the hamster as an alternative to frozen mice when it started refusing regular food.

The two have been living peacefully together in a box in at a zoo near Tokyo since October.

Gohan sometimes hides in the shadow of his leaner, meaner room mate.

The friendship between the small rodent and the reptile has surprised their keepers, who say they have never seen anything like it.
