I make cards for charity

Anna won Young Volunteer of the Year

Anna enjoys making cards so she decided to put her talent to good use and sell the cards to raise money for her local hospice.

She also recently won Young Volunteer of the Year and in her report she tells us more about her work.

"I have always made greeting cards.

I therefore decided to make and sell cards and give the proceeds to St Ann's Hospice.

And I was able to give them £78.05.

I chose to give the money to the hospice as it is close to my home, and I wanted to do something for a local charity.

Break from school work

I also hoped that I would be able to do some voluntary work as well as raise money.

I would like to spend some time with patients in the hospice, and hope to do this during my holidays.

I really enjoy making cards, it makes a relaxing break from school work!

I have had a lot of support from family, friends, neighbours and teachers.

Card price

It has been easy to source materials for the cards from local shops, but there have been a few difficulties, of course, which I have overcome.

The main problems have been the costs of materials, knowing how to price the cards.

And I still find it difficult to ask people if they would like to buy things from me, and even more difficult to take money from people!

It is also hard to publicise my cards and I am looking for different ways to do this.

I have designed flyers and order forms which I will hand out early before next Christmas.

Engraved trophy

The fund-raising officer at St Ann's, Mel Gait, asked me to apply for the Young Volunteer of the Year scheme, which I did, and I was fortunate enough to win.

The ceremony was held at the Manchester Conference Centre and was attended by lots of important people, including MPs.

I was very nervous, and didn't expect to win.

I was so excited when my name was called out.

I won an engraved trophy and a teddy bear, and three tickets to an ice show (so I can take my brother to this!).

I am going to carry on making and selling cards as it is something that I really enjoy.

Creative skills

I have learned a lot over the past few months.

I have learned that I can use my creative skills to make and sell cards that people wish to buy and other people enjoy receiving.

I am really pleased that I have raised money which will assist in direct patient care at the hospice."
