Missy Higgins: When I was 12

Missy Higgins

Missy Higgins may be not have been on the music scene for long but she's already a huge star in her native country of Australia.

Now she's hoping for international stardom as she releases a single and her debut album in the UK.

Here she tells us what she was like when she was younger.

Most Embarrassing moment at school?

We went swimming in the sea and I was one of the first girls to actually wear a strapless bikini. I dived in the water and my bikini top completely came off!

My classmates were standing on the jetty laughing and one of the boys jumped in to help me look. I ended up finding it around my waist, it had just fallen down. I was so scared that I was going to have to climb out of the water with no top on!

How much pocket money did you get?

It was about $20 (?10) a month. It would have been spent on buying lunch from the tuck-shop - instead of eating my mum's disgusting lunches in my lunchbox!

What did your school report say?

English: always good. Music: always good. Sport: always good. But mathematics: always pretty bad. I just wasn't interested in it at that time. I was more interested in being creative and writing stories.

What was your fave TV show?

A drama called Round the Twist, which was based on the author Paul Jennings' short stories.

What was your fave book?

The Goosebumps books, they were like children's horror - but they weren't really horror. I remember there being a whole series of them. I also really enjoyed the novel, Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden.

Who was your favourite teacher and why?

It was my PE teacher because I had a bit of a crush on him!

Were you bullied?

No I wasn't, I was always quite an outspoken child. There were definitely kids at school who got bullied, but I was usually the one who stood up for them. The real bullying went on amongst the boys.

But I do remember that I dyed my hair jet black one day and one of the boys said I looked like a witch. I remember getting really upset because he was the coolest boy at school.

Who was your hero or heroine?

I really liked Mariah Carey - my sister was really into her and everything that my sister was into, I was into. But I also liked Whitney Houston.
