Girl on basketball gets new limbs

Qian Hongyan walks with her new limbs
A girl who used to pull herself around on a basketball is now able to walk after being given a special set of artificial limbs.

Qian Hongyan, 9, lost both her legs in a car accident six years ago. Until now Qian, who lives in China, has been using the ball to help her move around.

But after hearing her story the Chinese government invited her to Bejing to fit her with false limbs.

Qian has learnt to walk using her new legs and is now back at school.

She used to get to school by dragging herself on the basketball using wooden blocks as props, and over the years she wore through six basketballs.

But now she uses her artificial limbs, and can take a break in her new wheelchair if she gets tired.

Improvements have also been made to help Qian get around at home in her village.

There are plans to clear away obstacles on the ground and make the gate to her home wider.
