New Year texting sets SMS record

The UK's thumbs were really busy over New Year, as a record 165 million text messages were sent between midnight on 31 December and midnight on 1 January.

That's a whopping 6.9 million an hour, and the highest daily total ever.

The previous New Year saw 133 million texts whizz between phones, 24% less than this year's total.

Texting has grown hugely in recent years, and the Mobile Data Association reckon we'll send about 36.5 billion texts in 2006.
