New Xbox has 'lock for parents'

The new Xbox 360
The new Xbox 360 will have a parental control on it which will enable mums and dads to stop their kids playing violent video games.

It will be the first console in the UK to have this kind of device on it.

The Xbox also has a control on the Xbox Live function which means parents can monitor what their kids do online.

"Xbox is the only system in the market that provides security features so parents can control what their kids play and watch," a spokesman said.

"We feel a strong responsibility to provide safety and security features and will continue to evolve this part of the plan over time," the spokesman added.

But John Beyer from the group Mediawatch UK, which campaigns for better taste and decency in the media, said it was "unrealistic" to expect parents to constantly look out for what games their kids were playing.

He called for games manufacturers to stop making such violent games in the first place.

Sony and Nintendo could not say at this stage whether or not their new consoles, the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Revolution, would have these parental controls.
