Saints name Burley as head coach

George Burley
Former Hearts and Ipswich boss George Burley is to be made Southampton's new head coach on Friday.

Sir Clive Woodward, the former England and British Lions rugby union head coach, is to be director of football.

Burley will take control of team selection and coaching while Woodward will look after other club issues.

"I'm excited by the prospect," said Burley, who is looking forward to his first game as the Saint's head coach at Vicarage Road on Boxing Day.

He added: "Southampton have an exciting young team and I believe that they should, and can, be much higher in the Championship table than they are. It's my job to make sure that this happens."

Dave Bassett and Dennis Wise looked after the club for a short time after Harry Redknapp left. Bassett will be leaving the club when Burley takes over but Wise will stay on as a player.
