Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii

Nintendo's latest games console hit the shops in 2006, with the first gamers in the UK getting their hands on it just before Christmas.

For a while the console was known as the Revolution, but then Nintendo changed the name and decided it would be called the Wii. It's smaller than the other new consoles, and isn't as high-tech, but is cheaper.

Key features:

  • Games come on 12-cm discs
  • Ability to download any Nintendo game from the last 20 years
  • Wireless internet access
  • Wireless controllers that can be used one-handed. The controllers also have sensors that allow gamers to control the action on screen by moving their hands when holding them.
  • If you buy an additional SDHC card (up to 32gb) you can save more information

The console isn't as powerful as the other two new ones, the PS3 and Xbox 360. But Nintendo are focusing more on the games available and the way people play them.

The new-style controllers have proved very popular, especially with people who don't normally play games.
