Contestants enjoy a fun bun climb

Climbers scramble up the tower with bags of buns on their back
Twelve people climbed up a bun-covered tower in Hong Kong on Monday to bring back a local tradition.

The climbers scrambled up the 14-metre steel tower and filled their bags with buns. The higher up they collected the buns, the more points they received.

The event was watched by thousands of people on the island of Cheung Chau.

The bun-climb was banned for 26 years after the tower collapsed and 100 people were hurt. But now it's been made safer and the ritual is back.

"This was banned even before I was born and I really wanted to see it," one schoolgirl said.

Lots of children dress up for the bun festival

The man who won, Kwok Ka-ming, scored 453 points after collecting the most buns.

The event is part of a bun festival which is held on the island to remember all the people who died there from the bubonic plague in the 19th Century.

The climber's buns are filled with lotus seed paste and they're believed to cure all illnesses.

More than 8,000 buns were handed out during the festival, which also saw children dressing up and float parades in the streets.
