Healthy options hit snacks sales

Crisps
Attempts to convince people to start eating more healthy foods may be working according to a new report.

Industry magazine The Grocer looked into sales of the top food brands in the UK and found we're spending less on things like crisps and sweets.

Sales of one type of crisps were £30m lower than the previous 12 months, and sugary snacks dropped too.

Some healthier products like smoothies and low fat crisps did much better than the year before.

Claire Hu, marketing editor at The Grocer, said: "It's been a challenging year for the food and drink industry" and added that falling sales may be linked to people in the UK becoming more worried about their weight.

She added: "Health is the number one issue for the industry at the moment and it is responding by investing heavily in innovations and lowering fat, sugar and salt levels in products."
