What is surfing?

Surfing is basically catching and riding waves on a board.

Surfers catch small or big waves - some up to 12 metres high - depending on how good they are.

They can also do tricks on the board by cutting across the front or face of the wave.

You need to be quite fit to do it and a be a good swimmer.

Before you start surfing, experience of swimming in the sea with waves is an advantage.

To learn to surf you need to go on a surfing course at a surf school. There you will be able to learn the basic techniques of paddling, catching, riding, turning and leaving a wave.
