Climate is 'big threat to Africa'

Baby elephant and mother
A top scientist has said that climate change is a bigger threat to wildlife in Africa than poachers.

Dr Richard Leakey spent years stopping poachers illegally killing creatures for their tusks or skins

But now he says rising temperatures are a bigger problem because Africa will become much drier in the future.

When it gets too hot herds like to move to cooler areas to find food and water, but the world is more built up now and they have fewer places to go.

Loads of money is spent each year to keep animals like elephants, lions and rhinoceros safe from poachers inside protected areas like national parks.

Extinction threat

But Dr Leakey thinks this could be money wasted because climate change is actually a bigger threat than poachers.

He's warning that if we don't do something about the problem - many species will be facing extinction.

He's trying to raise money to fund ways to protect animals from climate change so animals don't die out.
