Baghdad bombings kill 17 people

The scene of the explosion
A suicide bomb has killed 17 people including 13 Iraqis and four Westerners in a attack near a school in Baghdad.

More than 33 people, including several school girls, were also injured in the explosion thought to be targeting a convoy of cars used by Western workers.

The attack happened just a few hours before the final names of Iraqi cabinet members were thought to be announced.

Rebels have killed at least 250 people since Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari began naming his cabinet.

The latest attack sent a massive plume of dark smoke up into the sky above Tahrir Square in central Baghdad.

Western workers usually travel in convoys of cars, along with armed guards. Rebels frequently try and attack these convoys.

Recent violence

On Friday 16 people were killed in a car bomb attack in a market just south of Baghdad.

And 23 people were killed in suicide bombings and gun attacks on police and army targets in Baghdad on Thursday.
