Sportsround meets David Beckham

David Beckham
Can David Beckham do no wrong? From being voted one of the country's fave sports stars to opening a new footie academy, the England captain is definitely on a roll.

As he prepares for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Sportsround met the footballer to discuss the mighty match.

Have you been focusing on the 2006 World Cup in Germany?

The most important thing to me has always been, number one my family, but my football. I don't let anything get in the way of that.

I don't let anything get in the way of my performances on the pitch and in training.

Do you think there's a lot of pressure upon England being the only home nation to qualify for next year?

I think there's always gonna be a lot of pressure on the England team because the expectations of the players and of the team is huge.

And rightly so - because we've got some great players and we've got some great talent in our team.

But any big competition we go into, the support we get is one of the biggest things that pushes us on as players and as a team.

The support we got in Japan was incredible. The support we're going to get in Germany will be incredible. There's gonna be pressure but that's what we're out there doing.

We're out there playing football, and there's pressure in football.

You've got some younger players on the team that haven't played in a World Cup game before. Are you going to hold their hand and help them through it?

I doubt I'll hold their hand, but if they come to me for advice, then of course.

I'm one of the older ones unfortunately, and one of the more experienced ones that's played in two World Cup games before.

But they're talented and they're big enough to handle this. That's what is great about our team.

We've got a lot of great, strong personalities in the team, and I've always said since this team has qualified and beforehand, it's the best team spirit I've seen in an England team.
