Gandalf actor starts Corrie role

Sir Ian McKellen in Corrie
Fans of Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellen have had their first glimpse of the star in his new role - in Coronation Street.

The actor, who played Gandalf in the film trilogy, is going to appear in 10 episodes of the soap in May.

Sir Ian, 65, will play an outrageous novelist called Mel Hutchwright. He wears huge glasses and a flat cap.

It is Sir Ian's last big ambition as an actor as he's a huge fan of the show. "The script is hilarious," he said.

His character appears in Wetherfield and moves in with Emily and Norris. But the regulars soon find out there's more to Mel Hutchwright than meets the eye.

Sir Ian's other acting ambition was to be a pantomime dame, which he did when he starred as Widow Twanky in Aladdin in 2004.
