You get to use blocks, strikes and throws and you score points depending on how good your moves are.
You begin by learning the behavioural side such as taking a bow and walking quietly in the Dojo - the Japanese word for training hall.
You will also learn the discipline of standing in a straight line and standing to attention. This is called Karate-do.
The next three steps are the different levels of karate you progress through:
Kihon - basic techniques like kicking and punching and standing on one leg while you do this.
Kata - jumping and kicking to a set routine - a bit like a gymnastics floor exercise.
Kumite - fighting against a partner using set blocks, but without actually harming each other.
After this you move on to Jiyo Kumate which is freestyle fighting and can only be done after gaining your black belt - the highest level.
