Dog drives owner's car into river

Shep with his owner in the crashed car
A clever Collie learnt how to drive his owner's car - but unfortunately drove it down a bank and into a river.

Shep the daring doggie was left alone in the running car while his farmer owner went to deliver some eggs.

When his owner, Arnold Luscombe, came back, the car had plunged down a 12-metre bank and into a river, and Shep was still behind the wheel.

Luckily Shep was not hurt at all. "He must have knocked it into first gear," Mr Luscombe said.

The car in the river
His owner said he had left his car engine running because it's difficult to start, which meant when Shep put it into gear, the car just rolled forwards.

"We found the car with its wheels and bonnet in the water and Shep behind the steering wheel," he said.

He added that Shep was now banned from sitting in the front seat.
