Some of Britain's top teachers have been honoured in their own award show.

Nominees for The Teaching Awards 2005 were picked by pupils, parents, other teachers and school governors.

Top Primary Schoolteacher was Trevelyan May of Sholing Junior school. Mike Ullman, from Hockerill Anglo-European College, was best secondary teacher.

Richard Wallis, of Sandwich Technology School was best secondary head, and Angela Rawlinson of St James Junior school was fave primary head teacher.

A panel of judges chose the winners from nominees put forward by kids and school staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Miss Rawlinson said: "I have always wanted to be a teacher. I think it is a vocation, and there is just something inside of you that makes you want to do anything for children."

Mr Ullmann, who was chosen because of how he improved language learning, said: "I feel very honoured and happy for the college, which really deserves this accolade."
