Nintendo DS now on sale in the UK

Nintendo's DS handheld console
Gamers queued up at midnight on Thursday to get their hands on the latest version of Nintendo's GameBoy.

The handheld is called the DS, which stands for Dual Screen, and one of its two screens is controllable by touch.

The DS lets 16 players link up their machines and play together without any cables, and you can send messages and drawings to your pals.

The DS isn't the only new handheld coming soon, with Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) in shops in April.

The DS costs around £100 in most shops, while the PSP looks more expensive at around £180.

Nintendo's machine looks like it's aimed at younger gamers, while Sony's seems aimed at older fans and can play movies on special discs.

One shop in the UK opened 150 of its stores at midnight on Thursday so DS fans could be the first to play the new consoles.

The DS has already proved a big hit with gamers in the US and Japan where it's been on sale for a while.
