England kids' champion appointed

Meeting the kids
Children in England now have their own commissioner to help make sure that their opinions count.

Al Aynsley-Green, a professor of child health, has been appointed the first children's commissioner for England.

Children in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales already have commissioners. They look into any matter relating to the interests and well-being of kids.

Kids were involved in appointing Al to the job. Judith, 16, said she wanted someone who "would act, not just talk".

Al said: "I will be drawing on my experience of working with children and young people to help ensure that those with the power to improve children's lives do live up to their responsibilities.

Value

"I want all children and young people to know that they can approach me to discuss any matter that affects them, knowing that I value their opinion."
