A young Australian actor has entered the race to become the next James Bond, says US magazine Variety.

Sam Worthington, 29, is short-listed to play the British spy in the next film called Casino Royale.

Other main contenders for the role include actor Daniel Craig, 22-year-old Henry Cavill and ER star Goran Visnjic.

Screen tests for the film based on author Ian Fleming's first novel, will finish this week, says Variety. The film will be released in 2006.

It's thought the producers are looking for a new actor to replace current Bond, 52-year-old Pierce Brosnan.

No gadgets

Over the last few months loads of actors have been linked with the part, including Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, Hugh Jackman, Clive Owen and Dougray Scott.

Casino Royale is the first book author Ian Fleming wrote about the famous spy. In the book Bond is a younger man and doesn't have Q to turn to for gadgets.
