Exercising hamster dodges death

A hamster who took a wrong turn cheated death after a woman found him spinning along a busy road in his exercise ball.

The woman was driving her children to school when she spotted the rodent as he rolled between two moving cars.

She immediately stopped her car, scooped up the pet and rushed him to a nearby vet.

The brown Russian hamster is now being cared for by staff at the surgery in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset. Vets say he is unharmed after the incident.

Veterinary receptionist Jenni Knight thinks the risk-taking rodent may have escaped accidentally.

"He could have been in a garden and walked out through an open gate," Ms Knight told The Sun newspaper.

The hamster's owner has yet to be traced.
