More children are skipping school

Policeman talking to a truant
More and more kids are playing truant, even though the government has been trying to stop them skipping school.

This year saw the highest rise in numbers of kids bunking off, and the figures came out as tough new measures to fight the problem were announced.

The government wants to crack down on 8,000 of the worst truants, and also focus on the 146 worst schools.

Also, parents could be fined 2,500 or sent to jail for three months if their kids keep skipping school.

Small number of kids

Other plans include giving the worst truants a dedicated truancy officer to keep them going to classes.

Research shows that most truancy was carried out by a small number of kids, and some individual pupils were missing half a term each year.
