Champions League: Reds win 2-1

Liverpool's Florent Sinama-Pongolle
Title-holders Liverpool made a winning start to the group stage of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Real Betis of Spain.

The Reds' Florent Sinama Pongolle opened the scoring after just 87 seconds, with Luis Garcia doubling the tally on 14 minutes.

Garcia Arzu pulled a goal back for Betis just after half-time, but Liverpool held on for the win.

Chelsea and Rangers also won their first group stage matches.

A Frank Lampard free-kick gave the Blues a 1-0 win over Anderlecht of Belgium.

He almost scored again in the second-half, but the Anderlecht goalie made a diving save.

Anthony Vanden Borre nearly scored an equaliser for Anderlecht, but his long-range effort hit the post.

Sotiris Kyrgiakos of Rangers

A late header from Sotiris Kyrgiakos sealed a 3-2 victory for Rangers over Portugal's Porto.

Rangers' Peter Lovenkrands had opened the scoring just before the break, but Porto equalised just after the re-start.

Dado Prso put Rangers ahead again, but Porto were soon to reply.

Kyrgiakos got the winner with five minutes remaining.
