Last year's winners were arty Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand, for their self-titled debut album.
The shortlist was chosen by music industry experts from 170 of the best UK and Irish albums released in the last 12 months.
A spokesman for music store HMV said: "This looks like being the most open and high-profile Mercury contest ever."
The ceremony will be shown on BBC Four from 9pm.
