Computer saved girl from drowning

Children in a swimming pool
A 10-year-old girl has been saved from drowning in a swimming pool in Wales by a special computer system.

The girl, from Rochdale in England, had only been in the pool for short time when she sank to the bottom.

A £60,000 computer system called Poseidon realised she was on the floor and raised the alarm, even pinpointing exactly where she was to lifeguards.

They dived in to save her less than 90 seconds after she got into trouble. She later recovered in hospital.

She had been swimming in the deep end when she appeared to lose consciousness, falling right to the bottom.

As soon as the girl had been on the floor for three seconds the computer realised she was in trouble and set off an alarm.

Gwynedd County Council leisure officer Brian Evans said: "We feel as though the system has saved this little girl's life.

"The pool at the time was very busy. The lifeguards were at full stretch. We can say the extra pair of eyes identified her."

So far a Poseidon system has been fitted to eight swimming pools in the UK.
